Iran: NCRI’s Committee calls for release of jailed mothers

NCRI – Detention of a large number of mothers of slain protesters in recent uprising and political prisoners underscores the clerical regime’s helplessness in face of the Iranian people’s nationwide uprising in which women and young girls play an important role and in many cases leading role. The uprising has taken new dimensions and intensified everyday despite brutal suppression, killings and imposition of preventive measures.

The Women’s Committee of NCRI calls on all human rights organizations, particularly the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and women’s rights organizations to condemn the detention of these mothers and take urgent measures to get them released.

In order to prevent mothers’ weekly demonstration in Tehran’s Laleh Park, the regime’s suppressive forces arrested at least 33 of them and transferred them to a detention center in Vozara Street on Saturday, January 9. Some of the old women had to be taken to Firouzgar and Sajjad hospitals during last night before being returned to the detention center.

On Sunday morning, dozens more mothers staged protests outside the detention center and the revolutionary court chanting “Free the mothers” and “long live our mothers.” Two young people were arrested in these protests while filming the scene.

Since the early days of outbreak of nationwide uprisings, every Saturday mothers and relatives of political prisoners and detained protestors rally for their release.
