Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 44

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran

Saturday, October 29, 2022 – 9:00 PM CET

  • Days: 44th day
  • Protests: 203 cities
  • Fatalities: 450+ estimated deaths, 300 identified by MEK
  • Detentions: 25,000+

Protests continued today, marking the 44th day of the nationwide uprising, in dozens of cities across Iran. There was a large protest in Arak, during the burial ceremony of one of the protesters who had been arrested and killed while in custody.  People in Mahabad destroyed a symbol of the regime.

Following the death of a detainee in Sanandaj, people gathered outside Kowsar Hospital. Clashes have also been reported in Ardabil in central Azerbaijan province.

Today marks Cyrus the Great Day. The regime has blocked all roads to Pasargad, where the tomb of Cyrus the Great is located, preventing people from gathering there.

The IRGC Chief Hossein Salami warned protesters that Saturday would be their last day of protesting. His remark is a clear acknowledgment of the regime’s failure to quell the Iranian people’s nationwide uprising. It is also indicative of the regime’s intention to further intensify brutal suppression in the coming days.

  • Arak – People widely participated in the funeral of Mehrshad Shahidi who was killed by security forces. People chanted “Death to the IRGC,” “For all these years of crimes, death to Supreme Leader [Khamenei],” “I will kill whoever killed my brother” and “For every fallen person, another thousand will rise.” The protesters clashed with the security forces who were throwing tear gas at the crowd.
  • Sanandaj – The people gathered in front of the Kowsar Hospital, where Ashkan Morovati, who was injured by police officers the other day, was hospitalized. Yesterday, October 28, footage made rounds on Persian social media showing Ashkan fighting alone while he was surrounded by armed security forces.

  • Suppressive agents also attacked students at the Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in Sanandaj. A number of students were shot and wounded, and one of them is in serious condition.
  • Tehran – The students of the Technical Faculty of Tehran University chanted “the IRGC is our ISIS.” Students of Amir Kabir chanted “The blood in our veins is being drained by our leader,” “For all these years of crimes, death to the supreme leader!” and “For every fallen person, another thousand will rise!”. Students of Allameh Tabataba’i University staged a demonstration chanting: “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” Students of Beheshti University called out the suppressive forces, chanting: “You are disgraced people! I’m a free woman!” High school girl students also took to the streets chanting: “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!”
  • Ahvaz – Students of the Ahvaz Jondishapur University of Medical Sciences staged protests chanting, “Freedom, freedom, freedom,” “Death to the dictator” and “Jailed college students must be released!” Ahvaz young people were in control of the streets through the evening.
  • Mashhad – Students of Ferdowsi University chanted: “This is the year Seyed Ali (Khamenei) is overthrown!” Security forces launched an attack on the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad similar to that of Sharif University in Tehran, hitting and confining the students, according to activists.

Iran is infiltrating North Africa and Sahel through using malign actors such as the Algeria-backed Polisario separatist to sow instability in the region, Morocco’s representative to the UN Omar Hilal said. The comment came in response to a question on Morocco’s reaction to news claiming that Polisario has acquired Iranian drones.

“After destabilizing Yemen, Iran is trying to destabilize our region,” Hilale told reporters after the adoption by the UN security council of a resolution renewing the mandate of the UN mission in the Sahara for another year and urging the parties to seek a realistic solution based on compromise while stressing the pre-eminence of Morocco’s autonomy plan.
