Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 64

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran

Friday, November 18, 2022 – 7 PM CET

  • Days: 64
  • Protests: 231 cities
  • Fatalities: 600+ estimated deaths, 446 identified by MEK, over 50 teenagers
  • Detentions: 30,000+

By all accounts, the Iran Uprising of 2022 has accelerated and reached a new phase. The three-day general strike from 15 to 17 November will likely be extended into the coming days. Heightened protests, more massive demonstrations particularly in the Kurdish region, mourning ceremonies turning into demonstrations, an expanding strike in the commercial and industrial sector, unprecedented hesitancy and indecision in a regime faced with demoralized security forces and a failed strategy of suppressing the uprising, has led to a highly volatile situation in Iran.

Back-to-back pre-announced mourning ceremonies are defying the regime’s bid to quash the uprising as increasingly larger crowds and a wider section of society show up to protest the religious dictatorship of Ali Khamenei with each passing day. In the past few days, the grassroots nature of the uprising showed itself in numerous small towns, where people were almost unstoppable and brought the security forces to their knees.

After hundreds of killings by regime security forces, including scores of teenage lives cut short during the past couple of months, Iranian society is grieving and angry at the same time. No day passes without a memorial event in honor of one or more protesters in cities across Iran.

In addition, hundreds of families have held ceremonies for their loved ones who were killed three years ago during the November 2019 uprising when security forces fired at people on the first day of protests, killing at least 1,500 citizens in less than a week.

Every one of these ceremonies has become an opportunity for people to express their opposition to the regime and to call for its downfall.

Mourning ceremonies for a 10-year-old boy in the city of Izeh, in Khuzestan province, was one of the main events yesterday and today in several cities. His family and the Bakhtiari people of southern Iran all hit back at systemic attempts to paint the killing as a work of ISIS. The people blamed the IRGC for killing the young boy by chanting, “IRGC and Basij are our ISIS!”

In the city of Khomeyn, where the regime’s founder Ruhollah Khomeini hailed from, protesters attacked his family home and torched it overnight. Khomeini’s old home had been turned into a museum and seminary and the regime had aimed to turn it into a center for pilgrimage. The Qom Seminary, the center of clerical apparatus for training mullahs, was also attacked and torched last night and fire trucks could be seen putting out the flames.

As the regime used the pulpits of its Friday prayers today to bellow out calls for harsher crackdowns and more killings of protesters, they continued to enrage the public.

The people of Sistan and Baluchistan province were also out in force today in Zahedan and other cities.

Tabriz witnessed another huge protest in mourning for Aylar Haqqi, a 23-year-old woman who was killed by regime forces in the northwestern city of Tabriz.

In Semirom in central Iran, a huge procession mourned yet another killed protester, Ali Abbasi, and called for the downfall of the regime, “We swear on Ali’s blood; [Khamenei] will be overthrown!”

In another sharp turn of events, people have stepped up attacks on government and security centers all through the country, torching them with homemade Molotov Cocktails.

  • Qazvin, northwest Iran – Large crowd of protesters gathered to mark the 3rd day of Sepehr Esmaeeli’s murder by the regime’s oppressive security forces and began chanting: “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!”
  • Izeh, southwest Iran – Large crowd attending the funeral of 10-year-old Kian Pirfalak, murdered by the regime’s security forces on November 16 were chanting: “IRGC and Basij are our ISIS!”
  • Isfahan, central Iran – Units of the regime’s armed security forces were seen attacking unarmed and defenseless citizens.
  • Mahabad, northwest Iran – Earlier scenes of locals storming an IRGC paramilitary Basij base.
  • Mahabad, northwest Iran – People attended a funeral today and continued their massive rally in the city.
  • Zahedan, southeast Iran – Protesters chanting: “Death to the Basij!”, “Death to Khamenei!”
  • Bukan, northwest Iran – Protesters attacked an IRGC base and established roadblocks, taking control of their streets.
  • Sahneh, western Iran – Protesters chanted “Political prisoners must be released!”
  • Paveh, western Iran – Locals established roadblocks and chanted “Death to Khamenei!”
  • Sanandaj, western Iran – Protesters took control of their streets, according to local activists.

MEK Resistance Units Talk to London-based Magazine

Despite the severe repression, regime forces are exhausted because the people are not giving in,” says Nargis, a 25-year-old member of Iran’s resistance unit” (MEK). We will not rest until this regime is overthrown. We will continue our protests every day.”

To protect its members, the resistance is made up of a spiderweb of different units who have different jobs to do and different locations they are in charge of. One unit leads on gathering intel, another on getting news of the atrocities to the outside world. Just to get these interviews, my request had to go through the network’s maze. This is also a way of keeping members of the resistance anonymous. We had to find a way to stand against them without them being able to disperse us with their violence,” Faha says.
