Iran: Nationwide Protests By Oil Workers And Employees In Oil Centers In 9 Cities

On Wednesday morning, May 27, 2021, official employees of Iran’s oil company held rallies in different oil centers in Tehran, Assaluyeh, Abadan, Ahvaz, Gachsaran, Mahshahr, Bandar Deylam, Khark, and Lavan Island, protesting their low salaries and harsh livelihood condition due to skyrocketing prices.
The protests of the official employees of the oil company were held following a call to protests by Iran’s oil workers.

Workers held signs and placards which read: “Oil and gas are not produced easily, they are produced at the cost of our lives,” “This level of injustice is not the right of operational staff,” “Employment on offshore platforms and operational areas equals the sale of life,” “Equal pay increases in unequal conditions.”
Workers also chanted, “Be afraid, we are united,” “[Bijan] Zangeneh shame on you, leave the ministry,” “the oil minister is a disgrace,” and “We will not relent until we get our rights.”

Six Iranian Bahais sentenced to 73 years of prison in SW Iran


A Revolutionary Court in Dashtestan County, southwestern Iran sentenced six Iranian Bahais to a total of 73 years and six months of prison on May 19.

The Human Rights News Agency identified the six men and women who live in Shiraz and Borazjan as 53-year-old Borhan Esmaili, 27-year-old Dana Esmaili, 30-year-old Maryam Bashir, 33-year-old Minou Bashir, 48-year-old Faranak Sheikhi, and 49-year-old Haideh Ram.

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Borhan Esmaili to 11 years of prison for “Spreading propaganda against the state and acting against national security by promoting the Bahai faith”. The other five men and women were each sentenced to 12 years and six months of prison for “assisting in spreading propaganda against the state and acting against national security by promoting the Bahai faith” and “posting vulgar images in cyberspace and on social media to promote the Bahai faith”.

Iran: Coronavirus Death Toll in 543 Cities Exceeds 298,800


The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) announced on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, that the Coronavirus casualties in 543 cities had exceeded 298,800. The number of victims in Tehran has reached 69,816, Isfahan 19,885, Khorasan Razavi 18,195, Khuzestan 18,634, East Azerbaijan 12,248, Lorestan 12,050, Mazandaran 12,030, West Azerbaijan 11,213, Fars 9,887, Golestan 7,265, Sistan and Baluchestan 6,856, Kerman 6,693, Hamedan 6,623, Central Province 6,223, Ardabil 3,750, Hormozgan 3,580, Ilam 3,146, Bushehr 3,109, Qazvin 3,444, and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad 2,339.

Iran: COVID Vaccines for Officials, Death for the Public

Iran’s coronavirus crisis continues to grow worse and the daily death toll is in the triple digits while in many other countries, daily cases and deaths continue to decline. According to a May 19 report by the state-run Tasnim news agency, “A periodic comparison of the statistics in the past week shows that the mutated variant of the virus is still active. In some areas, the virus has risen to the point where there is concern that the current small flames of the disease all over the country will suddenly become a worrying crisis or cause the fifth peak throughout Iran.”

What’s Happening With Iran’s Power Outage?

On Monday, the state-run media wrote about how the power outages have been destructive across the country. The Hamdeli daily said that the outages are “a new challenge” that puts Iranians’ “lives in jeopardy”, as well as “threaten[ing] the lives of patients”, while the Farhikhtegan daily said that these outages were a common occurrence despite the Iranian public’s dependence on electricity for work, school, and staying alive. The state-run Jahan-e Sanat quoted Khomeini Hospital’s Head of Infectious Diseases Department Dr Hamid Emadi as saying that Covid-19 patients are being endangered by the lack of an oxygen machine.

Mass Execution of Six Baluch Men in Birjand Prison on Drug Charges

Six prisoners from Iran’s Baluchi ethnic minority were executed on drug charges in Birjand Prison at dawn on Tuesday. According to Rasanak, a regional human rights news agency, one of the men is identified as Javad Nakhaei, while the names of the other five are not yet known. All the six men had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges.
