Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 196

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran

Thursday, March 30, 2023 – 8 PM GMT + 1

  • Days: 196
  • Protests: 282 cities
  • Fatalities: 750+ estimated deaths, 675 identified by MEK
  • Detentions: 30,000

On this 196th day of Iran’s nationwide uprising, more protests are spreading across Iran despite the regime’s heavy crackdown measures and threats to impose massive financial fines on violators of strict dress code laws and other restrictions on the people’s basic rights. Iran’s economy is in deep waters, and more people are not only living from paycheck to paycheck but also finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet and put food on the table for their families.

Defiant youth in Rasht, northern Iran, targeted the regime’s municipality building located in the city’s District 4 area on Wednesday night local time and set it on fire.

MEK Resistance Units and defiant youth also undertook new activities against the regime’s sites and interests in various cities across the country.

  • Defiant youth attacked a building in Mashhad used by the mullahs’ regime to promote their ideology of hatred, misogyny, and fundamentalism. The attack led to a fire at the site.
  • Defiant youth targeted the regime’s Foreign Ministry Representative Office in the city of Kermanshah in western Iran. The attack led to a fire at the site. They also attacked the so-called “Khomeini Relief Center” in the city of Kish in southern Iran and set it on fire.
  • Defiant youth threw Molotov cocktails at IRGC paramilitary Basij sites in the cities of Mashhad, Hamadan, Bushehr, and Mahabad, setting them on fire.
  • MEK-affiliated Resistance Units torched large images of regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the cities of Yazd, Babol, and Qeshm and a large image of the eliminated IRGC Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani in Tehran.

  • MEK-affiliated Resistance Units had staged marches in recent days, chanting anti-regime slogans in Tehran and other cities, including Mashhad, Shiraz, Shahrekord, and Kashan. Their slogans included:
“Down with Khamenei! Hail to Rajavi!”
“The world should know that Massoud (Rajavi) is our leader. The National Liberation Army of Iran is our final response.”
“Down with oppressors, be it the Shah or [Khamenei]!”
“Freedom will be established with the motto of ‘We can and we must’!”
“Democracy and equality with Maryam Rajavi!”
“No to monarchy! No to [mullahs’ regime]! Democracy and equality!”
“Poverty-Corruption-High prices! We’re going to overthrow the regime!”

Iran’s Currency Continues to Dive

In an upward trend since the beginning of the new year on the Persian calendar, once again, the dollar crossed the 53 thousand toman threshold. Consequently, inflation continues to rise in the basic goods market.

According to some economic experts, the reason for the renewed upsurge is actually a rebound from the shock that was initiated following the agreement between Tehran and Riadh. These sources say the shock in the foreign exchange market caused a slight drop in the price of the dollar in early March.

The price of the US dollar versus the Iranian Rial experienced a record high of 60,000 tomans from 26,000 tomans in April 2022 and then went down for only two weeks.

US Should Target Iranian-backed Militias in Syria and Iraq – US General

mark milley 1

At the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, US General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US should target the Iranian regime’s Quds Force “harshly” in order to deter future rocket and drone attacks by Iranian-backed militias on US troops in Syria and Iraq.

“We do know that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard [Corps], and specifically their Quds Force — which is a designated terrorist organization — that group there is what we need to be targeting, and targeting them very harshly over time, and that’s exactly what we plan on doing,” Milley told US lawmakers.

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff warned that Iran, China, and Russia are getting closer and this rapprochement will be “problematic” for the United States “for many years to come”.

The governmental website Etemad Online (27, March 2023) in an article entitled “Rebellion of fundamentalists against Raisi” quotes Montjabnia, a former member of the reactionary parliament, as saying: “Currently, all the groups present in the fundamentalist faction, which is represented by Raisi in the government, are not behind the government. Raisi could not create unity and consensus in the fundamentalist faction.”

As an example, Montjabnia adds: “A person like Ahmad Tavakoli… wrote a very sharp and well-reasoned letter and strongly attacked and protested against the government. In many cases, Bahonar, Nategh Noori, and many famous personalities and unknown figures in the fundamentalist faction have opposed the government because they clearly see that many of the decisions that are made and the policies that are carried out are wrong.”
