Power Struggle Intensifies within The Ranks of Iran’s Regime

On the eve of the introduction of the new government by regime president Massoud Pezeshkian, the power struggle among the ruling factions for cabinet seats is escalating daily. Various factions and groups within the regime are aggressively vying for their share of positions to get a bigger share of plundering the country’s resources and the people’s wealth.

Pezeshkian has formed a body called the “Steering Council” to select members of his government, with former foreign minister Javad Zarif at its head. This has provoked the anger and dissatisfaction of the dominant faction, reflected in Tehran’s Friday prayers where the crowd chanted, “Zarif, get lost.”

The Iranian Regime’s Struggle: Legitimacy, Unity, and Repression

The Iranian regime is currently grappling with four significant crises: a crisis of legitimacy, a crisis of efficiency, a crisis of internal unity, and a crisis within its apparatus of repression.

These issues are compounded by widespread corruption among the wealthy ruling class and the regime’s inability to deceive the populace, coupled with increasing international pressure. As a result, maintaining an atmosphere of fear and control has become increasingly challenging for the security apparatus.

In an effort to stave off potential uprisings and address growing dissatisfaction both internally and externally, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei decided to appoint the next president from the so-called reformist faction. This strategic move aimed to delay any new uprisings by presenting a façade of reform and change.

Central Prison of Shiraz, Execution of a Woman: A Case of Coerced Marriage

On the morning of Saturday, July 20, 2024, the death sentences for three men and one woman were carried out at the Central Prison of Shiraz, also known as Adelabad.

The woman who was executed alongside the three male prisoners was named Mahmoudinia (first name unknown). She had been sentenced to death for “premeditated murder.”

Ms. Mahmoudinia was arrested and sentenced to death for killing her fiancé. She was unwilling to marry him and had been forced into the marriage by her family.

The Shortage of 80,000 Teachers in the New School Year in Iran

Alireza Monadi Sefidan, Chairman of the Education and Research Commission of the regime’s Majlis (parliament), announced a shortage of 70,000 to 80,000 teachers in the new academic year, stating that the retirement of a large number of teachers will create “huge gaps” in the country’s education system. He emphasized the need to send a letter to the new president to address the current situation and provide solutions, suggesting that increasing the amount of part-time teaching pay to motivate current teachers is a solution to this problem. He also mentioned that there are about 24,000 contractual teachers who need to be given permanent positions.

Following the continued increase in rental prices and the housing crisis in Iran, Iranian regime media have reported monthly rent for a bed in central Tehran at prices ranging from 65 to 106 million rials. The regime’s ecoIran website has announced that the minimum monthly rent for a bed in central Tehran is at least 65 million rials (approximately $112). It is worth noting that the minimum wage for a worker with two children is estimated to be around $200. The website emphasized that the majority of the demand for these dormitories and hostels comes from employees and workers.

Interrogation and Torture: The Story of Kurdish Political Prisoner Pakhshan Azizi

Political prisoner Pakhshan Azizi, currently held in Evin Prison, has penned a letter detailing the torture and pressures she faces. Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner from Mahabad who was arrested last year in Tehran and is now imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison, wrote a letter titled “Suppressing the Truth and Its Replacement,” narrating her arrest and torture by Iran’s security forces. Azizi writes: “I was hung multiple times by interrogators.”

For two weeks now, by order of the authorities at Evin Prison, journalist, and political prisoner Pakhshan Azizi has been deprived of phone calls and in-person visits. The efforts of this political prisoner’s family to establish contact and arrange visits at the prison have been unsuccessful, and they are concerned about Pakhshan Azizi’s health, with her family.
