Thursday Protests in Iran
Today, the people of Hamedan, northwest Iran, started the third day of demonstrations against water shortages in their city. For more than a week, these people have been witnessing their potable water being cut off between 12 to 24 hours a day. Many have to wait for hours in queue for water tankers. The condition of dam reserves is extremely critical and it is expected that the Ekbatan Dam, which is currently the main source of drinking water supply, will be dry and out of service by end of the first week of September.

Today in Tehran, a group of members of the Tehran Construction Engineering Organization gathered to demand their rights from their employers. According to local sources, the board of directors of TCEO has illegally withheld 1800 billion tomans of the engineers’ money since May 2013 and used it for other purposes.

Iran Shaken by Multi-billion-Dollar Steel Plant Embezzlement Case
Iran’s latest embezzlement case of 920 trillion rials involving the state-run Isfahan Mobarakeh Steel Company has once again shocked the country’s poverty-riddled population. This amounts to around $5.25 billion at the time of the reported embezzlement.
The Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) has suspended the Mobarakeh Steel Company following a damning report released last Thursday, August 18, over the massive case of corruption. Having an estimated value of nearly 2,940 trillion rials (around $10 billion in the current exchange rate), Mobarakeh Steel is registered as the second largest company in TSE.
