Javaid Rehman, Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, released his latest report on the subject, which he is scheduled to present at the next session of the UN Human Rights Council, on Friday, August 20th. The report addresses a variety of issues, including the critical situation during the pandemic, the issuance of death sentences, and the government’s impunity for human rights abuses in the country. According to the report, journalists and individuals calling for a boycott of the election were detained or harassed by security forces.

The rapporteur reiterated the lack of accountability of individuals and institutions that have violated the rights of Iranian citizens, such as the crackdown in November 1998 and the downing of the PS752 Ukrainian aircraft. Compensation to the families of these people can in no way replace the serious prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators.
