US updates Iran travel warning

(ABC NEWS) — The Department of State warned U.S. citizens Wednesday to consider the risks of travelling to Iran due to harassment of American nationals and the inability to provide tourists with protection in the country.

Citizens could be arrested while travelling in Iran, officials cautioned, referencing instances in which authorities have prevented the departure of Iranian-American citizens, including those who visited for professional reasons.

“Iranian authorities have unjustly detained or imprisoned U.S. citizens on various charges, including espionage and posing a threat to national security,” the statement reads.

Tensions between the two nations remain high, as the U.S. doesn’t have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The main form of protecting power for American interests in the country is the Swiss government, acting through its embassy in Tehran.

“Our ability to assist U.S. citizens in Iran in the event of an emergency is extremely limited,” officials added.
