US calls on Iranian regime to release Washington Post journalist

The U.S. Department of State called on the Iranian regime on Monday to free a Washington Post journalist and his wife and two others who have been arrested inside Iran last week, AFP reports.

In a statement, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said “We call on the Iranian government to immediately release Mr. Rezaian and the other three individuals. We continue to monitor the situation closely.”

In Tehran, the Iranian regime’s judiciary stated on Friday that Rezaian was arrested in Iran, along with his wife.

Esmaili stated that “the security forces have the whole country under surveillance and control the activities of enemies…they will not permit our country to become a land where our enemies and their agents carry out their activities.”

Rezaian has dual Iranian and American citizenship while his wife has an Iranian passport but has applioed for permanent residency in the United States.

Because the United States and the Iranian regime do not officially have diplomatic ties between them, the US has made its appeal through the Swiss embassy, which normally deals with such matters
