UN Security Council approves UNAMI mandate renewal

The UN Security Council acted anonymously and adopted a resolution Wednesday 30 July that extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) for another year, to 31 July 2015, Xinhua news agency reports.

The resolution “recognizes that security of United Nations personnel is essential for UNAMI to carry out its work for the benefit of the people of Iraq and calls upon the government of Iraq to continue to provide security and logistical support to the United Nations presence in Iraq.”

The Security Council acted after a request from Baghdad for the renewal of the UNAMI mandate. In a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq and Foreign Minister stated that the country would like the UNAMI mandate to be extended for an additional year.

The Security Council also called on UN member states to keep providing UNAMI with the resources and support that it needs.

Despite the deterioration of the situation in Iraq, the mandate itself has not been drastically altered. However, within the resolution, the Council said that it has “grave concern at the current security situation in Iraq.”

It added, “the long- term solution to the instability will require the political leadership of Iraq to make decisions that will unite the country” and emphasized “the importance of the international community supporting Iraq in this regard.”

The UNAMI was established in 2003 and has the mandate to advise and assist the government and Iraqi population on various issues including advancing inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation..
