Mr Abdi Maalim, the director of Zanzibar Maritime Authority said that what the Iranian tankers are doing is unacceptable, Tanzanian Daily news reported.
“We nullified our contract with the 36 Iranian tankers to avoid falling victim with the international community. We do not want any conflict,” he said.
According to shipping databases Marine Traffic and Fleemon, despite the deregistering at least three ships owned by NITC have been emitting the Tanzanian code.
Maalim said: “I have written to our main agent in Dubai ‘Philtex’ asking to be watchful.”
“We have sent letters containing the identification of all Iranian tankers of which we broke contract with to some international ports so that they help us control misuse of our identity.”
He said his office has also written a letter of complaint to the Iranian regime’s authorities to stop using Tanzanian flags and signals.
