Syrian opposition’s taking Damascus seat angers Iranian regime

NCRI – Syrian opposition replacing the al-Assad regime to fill Syria’s seat at the Arab League 24th session on Tuesday in Doha, capital of Qatar, has angered the Iranian regime describing it as a “dangerous behavior of the Arab world.”

With Syrian membership to the 22-member league suspended in November 2011, the seat at Tuesday’s summit was filled by Moaz al-Khatib, a leading figure among Syria’s opposition coalition that is battling to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

“Assigning Syria’s seat to the Arab League to those who don’t have the backing of the people establishes a pattern of dangerous behavior for the Arab world that can set a new precedent for other members of the Arab League in the future,” said Iranian regime’s deputy foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdullahian, state-run news agency ISNA reported on Tuesday.

Leading an opposition delegation into the Doha meeting to thunderous applause from Arab leaders, Khatib demanded that the opposition also be allowed to represent Syria at the United Nations.
