Sheikh of Al-Azhar condemns the Iranian regime’s policies

NCRI – Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayeb, Imam of Egypt's al-Azhar, has condemned the Iranian regime’s policies against Sunni Muslims as well as its attempts to export fundamentalism in the Islamic world. He stressed that al-Azhar will resist the measures.

Reporting on al-Tayeb’s remarks, the Kuwaiti daily al-Sayassah wrote, “Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayeb said that the Iranian regime prevents activities of Sunni Muslims, adding, ‘al-Azhar will confront their measures against Sunni Muslims and will not allow them to trap Sunni youths.’”

According to al-Sayassah, al-Tayeb stressed that he will continue al-Azhar’s attempts to draw Sunnis and Shiites closer, efforts which began under the leadership of the former al-Azhar mufti Mahmoud Shaltout.

Al-Tayeb said he was pleased about the education provided to Shiites at al-Azhar and called it an opportunity for the Shiite students to gain a more intimate knowledge of the Sunni religion.
