New satellite images of construction of a fake U.S. aircraft carrier in Iran released

Digital Globe and Google have released additional images of the Gachin shipyard near Bandar Abbas (Southern Iran) that show the construction work on a fake U.S. aircraft carrier.

Last month, the New York Times reported that satellite images appeared to show that the Iranian regime was undertaking a strange task: Creating a nonfunctional, full-size replica of an American Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

Analysts have told the Times that the boat might be blown up, either as target practice or for propaganda purposes. Iranian media rebutted these theories, instead reporting that the boat was part of a set being built for a movie based on the 1988 downing of an Iran Air passenger jet by the USS Vincennes.

The senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee sais Iran’s construction of a mock-up U.S. aircraft carrier demonstrates Iran’s continued lack of good faith, USA today reported on March 24.

“We don’t really know what it means, but I for sure don’t trust the Iranians,” Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., said. “It’s some kind of a ruse and whatever they are up to, it’s no good.”
