U.S. President Barack Obama declared Friday that military intervention by Russia and Iran’s regime in Syria’s civil war “will not work.”
“Iran is going to send more people in, but it’s not going to work,” Mr. Obama said at a White House press conference. “Their basic premise … about Syria has not worked and will not work.”
He said Moscow and Tehran are supporting a regime in Syria “that is not legitimate.”
Iran’s regime is sending troops to support Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, and Russia started a bombing campaign against Assad’s opponents on September 30.
Touching on a recent long-range missile test conducted by the Tehran regime, Mr. Obama said: “Iran has often violated some of the prohibitions surrounding missile testing.”
He said that the United States would continue to press Iran’s regime and make clear “that there are costs to bad behavior.”
