The Kurdish Regional Government on Monday called for the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to apologize to Iraqi nationals and retire from politics, Anadolu Agency reported on Monday.
Umid Sabah, the spokesperson for President Massoud Barzani of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, slammed Maliki’s recent statements in the media about the rights of Iraqi people, federalism, the constitution and the country’s political process on a website statement.
“The Maliki government is the worst one in Iraq’s history,” Sabah stated, claiming that the eight-year government has left a collapsed Iraq behind.
“Sectarian clashes have increased, people complain bitterly due to the bad economic situation and the Iraqi prime minister cannot absolve himself from this situation,” added Sabah.
He stated that security and welfare have failed and corruption in the country ranked first in the world. He also added that the health sector has collapsed despite the high income and budget, with people becoming poorer and human rights worsening.
“The Iraqi government jeopardized unity of the country, and the Kurdish people now consider their partnership with the central government being ignored and the constitution not being applied,” added Sabah.
Meanwhile on Tuesday Agence France Press reported that Iraqi Kurds want “widely disliked Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki out of office.”
“Massud Barzani, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, has frequently spoken out against Maliki, accusing him of monopolising power. He has voiced fears Maliki would use F-16 jets ordered from the United States against the Kurds, and called for his removal from office,” the report said.
“Maliki has not been beneficial for the Kurds or any Iraqis,” and it is time for a new prime minister, Tariq Jawhar, a Kurdish parliamentary candidate, told AFP.
