IRGC commander fears ‘rebellion’ by Iranian people

NCRI – A senior commander of the Iranian regime’s Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) expressed his fear of uprising by the Iranian people and said the main task of the Special Forces is to “control rebellion” by Iranian people.

IRGC Commander Hassan Karami, the chief of the forces Anti-Terror Special Units said that this force known as NOPO has been renamed as the “Special Force Guarding Velayat (absolute rule of clergy) in Iran ”.

He said that “controlling rebellion (by the Iranian people) is among the principal and special missions of this unit”.

Responding to a question on the reason for an extensive presence of the Special Units in streets of Tehran after 2009 protest in Iran, he said that “part of our forces are under the command of the security commanders of provinces and we just give them equipment and training. The commanders of provinces sometimes deploy these forces according to their contingency plans”.

He explained: “For example something has happened in the market concerning currency fluctuations and they deploy this unit. They even use them in the last Wednesdays of the year,” during the annual fire festival that turns to anti-regime protests.

Hassan Karami stated: “The Special Units have no activities on the borders, but they are spread out throughout the country,” with the principal units in Tehran.

He noted that the Special Unit forces were present in the apolitical or labor protests, issues involving water and gas, or in the protests arising from the TV series such as “The old land” and that their most serious engagement involved the issue of water in Isfahan.
