Iran: Over five million affected by drug addiction, minister admits

A census has revealed there are now 1,350,000 drug addicts in Iran – with the figure soaring to five million if family members of abusers are included, the Iranian regime’s interior minister Abdul Reza Rahmani Fazli has admitted.

There has also been a steep rise in the number of women addicts, and 17 per cent of those using illegal drugs are now educated to Bachelor of Science level or higher, the census found.

Fazli said in a speech in Tehran on Thursday: “80 per cent of those addicted have themselves become distributors and sellers of drugs.

“Turnover and profits from the production and transport of drugs in the world is more than a thousand billion dollars. With a turnover of three billion dollars in narcotics in Iran alone, this indicates that Iranian drug producers in Iran make high profits and that the risks are worth it in this activity.”
