Brown to push for Iran curbs

LONDON (Gulf Daily News) –  Global terrorism, tougher sanctions on Iran and restarting the stalled Doha rounds of World Trade Organisation talks are among the issues to be discussed between British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and US President George Bush.

Brown, who arrived on a first official visit to US early this morning since taking office, will also push for a stiffer international response to the violence in Sudan’s Darfur region.

Brown said the focus of the visit is to strengthen strong bilateral ties with the US.

London and Washington are focused on "the biggest single and immediate challenge the world has to defeat: global terrorism," Brown said.

He denied speculation that ties with US was cooling.

Earlier, his spokesman Mark Ellam said Brown would discuss his desire for tough sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

There are also some thorny issues in his policy folder, not least the fate of Britain’s remaining soldiers in Iraq.

Other difficult issues include the American push to build a missile defence system in Eastern Europe and the status of the breakaway Serbian province of Kosovo.
