Australia: Death of Iranian asylum seeker prompted rally by hundreds in Melbourne

australia-protest-asylumHundreds of people attended a protest rally in Melbourne against the federal government’s asylum seeker policies.

The rally was prompted by the unrest at the Manus Island detention centre in Papua New Guinea that led to the death of an Iranian asylum seeker.

Protesters chanted: “Stop Manus Now, Stop Manus Now, Stop Manus Now.” These protesters say they are fed up with unsafe conditions for asylum seekers in Australian detention centres.

Tensions at the Manus Island detention centre have led to the death of a 23-year old Iranian asylum seeker, Reza Bertali.
