Allawi warns power vacuum will continue unless Iraqiya governs

Allawi warns power vacuum will continue unless Iraqiya governsAllawi, whose Iraqiya alliance edged out Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki's party in the March 7 national elections, told Gulf News that the list (bloc) that won the elections should be invited to form the new government.

Gulf News – Iraq's power vacuum is likely to continue unless the political parties stop wrangling over the right to form government, former prime minister Eyad Allawi said.

Allawi, whose Iraqiya alliance edged out Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki's party in the March 7 national elections, told Gulf News that the list (bloc) that won the elections should be invited to form the new government.

The constitution does not give any right to coalitions formed after the elections to form the government, he added.

"This [government formation] is our democratic right. The other blocs and coalitions have to be convinced that democracy cannot be interpreted haphazardly," Allawi said.

Referring to the continued violence, the former prime minister said: "People do not trust this government on the security issue. The number of Iraqi martyrs and wounded reached 7,000 since the beginning of 2010. This is a horrifying number by any measure."

He added: "Iraqiya is the tool for a national project. It is Iraqiya which adopted the national project to protect Iraq from political and sectarian quotas, and abides by and advocates the principles of national reconciliation."

Allawi also said that Iran's interference in internal Iraqi issues was clear and it should stop immediately.
