Belarus State University Professor, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Negative Impact of the Unilateral Coercive Measures, has stated that she will travel to Iran with a “spirit of cooperation and dialogue,” from May 7 to 18 to investigate the negative effects of sanctions on human rights in Iran, and to hold “private meetings” with “International Financial Institutions, and National Human Rights Institution” in Tehran!

While there are growing international calls for a UN inquiry into the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, the regime’s invitation to the Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of the unilateral coercive measures is a scandalous scenario for circumventing sanctions and a reminder of the shameful betrayal of human rights by the regime when it invited the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran to for a guided and controlled visit to Iran, in the aftermath of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners.

By inviting the UN Special Rapporteur this time, Iran’s religious fascism, which has been condemned 68 times by the United Nations for brutal and systematic human rights abuses, seeks to undermine international sanctions. For 26 years, this regime has refused to receive the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran, and for 17 years, no other UN Special Rapporteurs on human rights issues have been allowed to enter Iran.

The clerical regime is also trying to cover up the astronomical plundering and widespread corruption of its officials, and their squandering of the Iranian people’s wealth and resources on developing the unpatriotic nuclear and missile projects and warmongering in the region, which are the main cause of poverty, unemployment, and inflation at home.

The Iranian Resistance strongly condemns the clerical regime’s manipulation of the United Nations, its bodies, and rapporteurs, which undermines the human rights situation in Iran, and is aimed at whitewashing the crimes it has perpetrated. The United Nations must hold Ebrahim Raisi, the henchman of the 1988 massacre, accountable; and investigate the massacre of protesters during the November 2019 uprising, as well as the downing of the Ukrainian passenger plane in January 2020.
