UN votes to extend mandate of Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran

NCRI – The United Nations Human Rights Council voted by an overwhelming margin on Thursday to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran for period of one year.

The resolution for extension of the mandate was adopted by 26-2 vote and 17 abstentions.

The resolution requires that the Special Rapporteur submit reports on the implementation of the mandate at the next session of the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.

It also calls on the Iranian regime to cooperate fully with the Special Rapporteur Ahmed Shaheed and to permit access to the country.

Dr. Shaheed had introduced a 77-page report on the situation of human rights in Iran during his speech to the Council on 12 March.
