Teachers and student activists arrested in Tehran and Tabriz

Teachers and student activists arrested in Tehran and TabrizNCRI – On Wednesday, May 19, Esmail Abdi, a member of the Trade Association of Teachers in Iran, was arrested by security forces in Tehran.

After his arrest, Abdi’s house was searched while the agents confiscated his computer.

Thus far, there are no information about his whereabouts or possible charges levied against him.

Aydin Khajei, a student activist in Azerbaijan studying law at the University of Tabriz, has also been arrested by the regime’s security forces.

According to Khajei’s family, the student activist was arrested the night of Wednesday, May 19. He contacted his family a few hours after leaving the house and informed them about his arrest by intelligence agents.

Khajei had previously been arrested in the summer of 2008 in connection with managing a student movement weblog in Azerbaijan. He was sentenced to a minimum of one year and maximum of two years in prison. He was released on November 10, 2009.

The Azeri student activist’s arrests comes as the June anniversary of demonstrations in Azerbaijan in protest to an offensive caricature in the state-run Iran daily draw near. A wave of arrests has already started in Azerbaijan. In recent days, the following people have also been arrested: Ramin Jabbari, Ayat Mehr-Ali Bigloo, Hafez Sardarpour, Nader Azizi, Mehdi Zinali, Alireza Hosseinzadeh, Reza Abdi, Hossein Mohammadi Alvar, Mostafa Jamshidi, Mahnaz Karimi, and Mohammad Farajian.
