Prominent Finnish politician: UN must condemn rights abuses in Iran

NCRI – The United Nations General Assembly must condemn the human rights abuses being carried out in Iran by the mullahs’ regime, Kimmo Sasi, a former lawmaker and government minister from Finland, said in an interview with NCR-Iran.org.

The July 14 nuclear deal between Iran’s regime and the major world powers “has not changed the situation in Iran in relations to human rights,” Mr. Sasi said on the sidelines of a meeting at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on September 18 in which the staggering rate of executions in Iran during Hassan Rouhani’s tenure as President was strongly condemned.

“When the United Nations General Assembly meets this autumn, they have to condemn the infringement of human rights in Iran,” Mr. Sasi said, adding that the international community must not ignore human rights abuses in Iran as attention is paid to the nuclear deal.

He urged the UN General Assembly to be clear in insisting that it would “not accept infringements against human rights” in Iran.

“The UN Security Council must make a decision concerning infringements of human rights, and punitive measures must take place so there is clear pressure against Iran to improve the situation and follow the international norms of the United Nations to guarantee basic human rights to all citizens of the country,” he added.
