Italian lawmakers demand immediate intervention regarding human rights abuses in Iran

Italian ParliamentNCRI – During a parliamentary meeting, Members of the Italian Parliament condemned the Iranian regime’s human rights violations, including the execution of a young woman, Delara Darabi, Delta News website reported on May 7. They lawmakers demanded immediate intervention meant to stop such crimes.

The session was held in memory of Delara Darabi, a 23 year old Iranian painter who was hanged by the Iranian regime on May 1. Ms Souad Sbai, MP from the governing party, The People of Freedom (Il Popolo della Libertà) called on all her colleagues to adopt measures aimed at preventing such crimes committed by the Iranian regime. She urged other parliamentarians to strongly condemn the murder of Delara Darabi.

Ms Souad Sbai noted that Delara Darabi was sent to the gallows on the morning of May 1 while remaining silent and calm, without the prior knowledge of her family and lawyer. She added that this was an illegitimate action both morally and also in terms of international law, and that no one can remain silent about it.

Ms. Souad Sbai called on the Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, to conduct investigations in this regard, while calling the clerical regime a racist and fundamentalist regime, which despite an apparent acceptance of its obligations, expressed through its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, despicable remarks at a UN forum recently.

Ms. Silvana Mura, Member of Parliament from the Italy of Values party (Italia dei Valori) stated that occurrences such as the death of Delara Darabi must awaken the conscience of all men and women who believe in democracy and freedom, because no one can ignore human rights violations. Iran, she added, is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international conventions forbidding the execution of minors, but its regime has failed to respect these obligations.

Ms. Jole Santelli, MP from the governing party, said that a firm position must be adopted against the Iranian regime in order to put a stop to human rights violations in Iran. She added that economic and trade relations must not lead to overlooking human rights abuses.
