Iran: Worsening conditions at the already horrific Gohardasht prison

GohardachtNCRI – The inhumane conditions at Gohardasht prison in Karaj have critically deteriorated in light of the scorching summer heat in Iran. According to a letter from political prisoner Saeed Masouri, which recently leaked out of prison, he described the prison atmosphere as one “replete with fire, smoke, and burnt and tired faces; red faces with blemishes as a result of louse bites; dirty bare feet; clothes worn inside out due to louses crawling in them; dirty and polluted air coupled with the stench of abandoned garbage; leaking toilets; and dried up vomit from people experiencing food poisoning.”

In another part of this shocking letter, Masouri writes, “Faces showing signs of fatigue as a result of malnutrition, hidden behind muddled hair and beards, heart wrenching coughs signaling lung problems as a result of the polluted airtight atmosphere, and abnormal bodies reminiscent of those of deprived and poor children in Africa. One can understand the reason for all this when one understands that 1,100 people have been incarcerated in a place that normally has the capacity for a maximum of 90 people. There is only one shower for every 250 people, one soap or dish washing liquid for every 500 people, one toilet for every 170 people (most of which are full and leaking) and a square meter of space for every 5 individuals.”
