A number of toddlers and children under the age of 2 are also believed to live at the Women’s Ward with their mothers.
The prison’s Ward 2 has no drinking water, leading to health hazards for the mothers and their babies. The Ward is supplied with water pumped from wells dug out in the prison itself, and does not meet health standards. Some political and regular prisoners are now facing severe kidney infections.
About 20 female political prisoners are being held at Evin’s Women’s Ward. 32 female prisoners are on death row and may be executed at any moment. Their ages range from 18 to 47, with some of them spending the last 15 years of their lives behind bars faced with death sentences.
