Iran: Riot in Yazd central prison

prison-riot-yazd150NCRI – A big prison riot broke out on Monday in the central city of Yazd. Prisoners were repeatedly ill treated and insulted by the prison guards.

Prisoners are often harassed by the city's prosecutor who visits the facility every weekend, according to the Resistance sources in Iran.

There are 300 inmates who have mostly been transferred from other places to the prison.

Prison riots are not isolated events in Iran. Extreme prison conditions often drive the inmates into riots. The most recent was on January 16 when prisoners in ward 5 of the notorious Gohardasht prison, 40 kilometers west of the capital, went into a rampage protesting to cell block's lack of proper heating and food rations.

In that incident, the special units of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) beat up the rioters and transferred 40 inmates to an unknown location.
