Iran: Prisoner dies after being refused access to medical treatment

In the northwestern city of Maraqeh, a 40-year-old prisoner died on January 5 due to lack of medical treatment. He is reported to have approached the prison clinic many times in vain before he finally lost his life.

Prison officials in Evin Prison have also deprived political prisoner Hani Yazarlou of access to a doctor and medical treatment for the past three months. Mr Yazarlou, who had open-heart surgery ten years ago, is in urgent need of a three-stage heart scan in a hospital outside the prison, but he has been denied access to the third stage of treatment.

He is a political prisoner sentenced to one-year imprisonment with physical punishment and 15 years forced exile to the city of Iranshahr on charges of propaganda against the government and provoking the public to act against national security.
