Gohardasht prisonNCRI – Mr. Afshin Baimani, a Political prisoner and supporter of the main Iranian opposition movement, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), began a hunger strike on Saturday December 22 to protest the mullahs’ regime pressures on prisoners and depriving them of medical care. Mr. Baimani suffers from various illnesses including heart problems due to brutal torture and deteriorating prison condition.

Afshin Baimani was arrested on September 5, 2000 and subsequently sentenced to death for helping his brother, a PMOI member, to escape the country.

The mullahs’ henchmen arrested and detained his wife and two children in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison in order to force him to make false confession. His death sentence was changed to life imprisonment following protests by human rights organizations and activists.

His brother, Mehdi Baymani, was killed by the regime’s Revolutionary Guards on the day of Afshin’s arrest.

Afshin Baimani was born in city of Mahshahr, southwestern Iran. The Iranian regime transferred him to Gohardasht prison in city of Karaj to put pressure on him and deprive him of family visits.

The Iranian Resistance calls on international bodies to immediately address the deteriorating prison conditions in Iran and take necessary actions to free political prisoners.
