Iran: New restrictions for bus drivers on women passengers

New restrictions for bus drivers on women passengersNCRI – The mullahs' Chief of Traffic Police, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Royanian said, "Women are not to ride in the second row behind the bus driver's seat," reported the state-run news agency ISNA on Monday.

"Even if the women are accompanied by a male family member, still the driver is not allowed to have them seated in the second row," Royanian emphatically said.

"The violators will be given a warning citation for the first time. However, the next time around, a three months jail term is mandatory by law," the police chief said.

It is unfortunate that some bus drivers do not abide by the Islamic codes and listen to music considered not fit, he said.

On December 9, another restriction was imposed on women passengers in Qazvin, some 165 kilometers northwest of Tehran. Brig. Gen. Akbar Hedayati, chief of the State Security Forces (SSF) in the area said that women are not to mix with the men in riding buses.
"We were testing the new measure [bus segregation] since the beginning of October. The results were satisfactory and now the buses are working under new plan," Hedayati told the state-run news agency ISNA on December 9.

The plan was first tested in April and May by the SSF. But it was postponed until now, SSF chief in Qazvin said.
