Iran: Hundreds of citizens demonstrate in Mahabad demanding Farzad Kamangar’s release

farzad kamgar150NCRI – This morning hundreds of residents of the northwestern city of Mahabad demonstrated demanding the release of Farzad Kamangar, a Kurdish political prisoner, form jail.

The mullahs' local official attempted to contain the demonstration by dispatching agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) as well as special units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to the Mahabad's main square where the protests were taking place.

The security forces were trying to agitate the demonstrators and turned into violence. The protesters carried banners and posters in support of the jailed activist.

The mullahs' Supreme Court upheld an earlier death sentence by a lower court for three Kurdish political activists Farzad Kamangar, Ali Heidarian and Farhad Vakili on July 11. The three were first arrested on April 2006 and tried in the lower court in February 2007.

The three political prisoners have been tortured repeatedly while in jail in the past three years.
