Iran: A young man sentenced to death for drinking

Iran: A young man sentenced to death for drinkingNCRI – A court has sentenced a 22-year-old man to death for violating mullah’s ban on drinking alcohol.

Under the mullahs’ rule in Iran a person who is caught drinking for a fourth time and confesses to the act faces possible capital punishment.

"My client had drunken at home for a fourth time and he made some disturbances in the street and police arrested him," his lawyer, Aziz Nokandei, told the state-run news agency ISNA on Tuesday.

Nokandei said his client, identified only by his first name Mohsen, had confessed and expressed remorse. First-time violators of the strict alcohol laws face possible lashes, fines or jail.

The Iranian regime has stepped up the number of executions in the country since the State Security Forces (SSF) launched a clampdown on "immoral behavior" in July.

Last week, Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, mullahs’ judiciary chief, ordered a halt to public executions in Iran unless they have his approval.

While those sentenced to death would still be hanged behind prison walls, the move by Hashemi Shahroudi appeared to be designed to lower the public profile of Iran’s increasing number of executions.
