Campaigners demand UN ‘probe and prosecute’ Iran’s 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners

NCRI – Iranians around the world have called on the United Nations to investigate the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran and prosecute all those involved in the genocide.

The UN Security Council must also provide proper protection for Iranian dissidents in Camp Liberty until they can be returned to Ashraf, leading Iranians said.

The demand was made by the World Alliance of Iranian Communities in Defense of Ashraf and Liberty residents in a global campaign launched on the 25th anniversary of the mass slaughter.

A statement from the Alliance said: “Twenty-five years have passed since the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners by the blood shedding mullahs’ regime.

“This crime is a blatant example of crimes against humanity comparable with the genocide following World War II, and one of the darkest pages of Iran’s history.

“Khomeini intended to eliminate his opponents with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) topping the list, and thus guaranteeing the survival of his hideous regime.

“Yet he did not know that the pure blood of the martyrs, who went to the gallows because of their perseverance on their oath to bring freedom to Iran, will live on forever.

“The Iranian people and the history of this country will always remember those who sacrificed their lives for Iran’s freedom, and the mullahs’ regime will always bear the disgrace of this crime until their overthrow.”

And while WWII criminals were on the run, those responsible for the 1988 massacre still remained in power in the highest ranks of the regime, the statement said.

It added: “Khamenei and most of the current regime’s senior officials, from the president to most of the elements of the judiciary and intelligence apparatus, were all directly involved in the carnage. Following that horrific crime they are continuing to torture and execute prisoners non-stop.

“The indifference shown by the international community has actually further encouraged these crimes. This is one of the filthiest aspects of the repulsive appeasement policy vis-à-vis the religious fascism ruling Iran, while as a result the Iranian people are paying the heaviest price.”

The massacres of PMOI (MEK) members in Ashraf and Liberty and in the mullahs’ prisons were also the continuation of the ‘dream’ to annihilate the PMOI, the Alliance said.

And it attacked the ‘disgraceful shadow’ of the international community’s silence as anther almost 90 prisoners have been executed in Iran the past month, and many others suffering lashing and amputations, they added.

The statement continued: “Twenty five years ago they sought to overcome the regime’s deep crises by massacring the prisoners, and today they see the only solution to maintaining their regime as massacring the Ashraf and Liberty residents.”

The Alliance also called on all Iranian communities to urge MPs, political parties and human rights groups to approve resolutions and statements recognizing the 1988 massacre as a crime against humanity as a genocide, and insist their governments back a UN probe into the slaughter.

The campaigners also called on their Iranian compatriots to stage demonstrations demanding a UN investigation, and gather evidence of crimes of the Iranian regime, including the locations of mass graves and the names of interrogators and torturers involved in the massacre.
