Belgian Politicians Urge UN High Commissioner: Halt Execution of Political Prisoner Javad Vafai

mohammad javad vafaei thani (1)

A joint letter signed by fifteen members of parliament and politicians from Belgium urged Mr. Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to take immediate action to prevent the execution of Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, a 27-year-old political prisoner unjustly sentenced to death in Iran.

As reported by the Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, Mr. Vafa’i Thani, a boxing champion, was accused of “corruption on Earth” and sentenced to death by a judge in Mashhad. He has faced torture during his imprisonment, raising serious concerns about the violation of his fundamental human rights, the letter reads.

This joint statement calls upon the United Nations, the European Union, member states, and relevant human rights organizations to unite efforts in urging the Iranian authorities to halt the execution immediately. Time is of the essence, and swift action is needed to ensure Mr. Vafa’i Thani’s safety and the protection of his human rights.
