Iran’s economy crippled by failing factories, bribery and soaring imports

NCRI – Eight out of ten factories in Iran are in financial crisis and on the brink of going bust, a conference on the regime’s economy has heard.

The excessive import of foreign goods was also crippling the nation’s fragile market-place, the same conference in the city of Mashhad was told.

And government departments were so rife with corruption and bribery that they were ceasing to function properly, the head of the parliament’s Economy Commission Arsalan Fathipour told the gathering.

He said: “No work can be done in government departments without bribery. The country’s liquidity has reached $430 billion and with the present situation, the inflation rate can not be controlled.”

He also criticized the actions of the Central Bank, adding: “They continuously speak of supporting national production, but does not act upon it. Nothing is left of the national production. The maximum capacity of production in industrial cities is 40 percent.”

Alireza Mahjoub, a member of the parliament’s Social Commission, said: “Presently out of every 10 production units, 8 have a critical condition and are close to a crisis.”

The head of the Industrial Investigation and Development Association, Ahmad Tavakoli, also attacked the state of the country’s industry, adding: “In the rest of the world, it’s industry that pays for the universities. Whereas in Iran such a thing does not exist.”

And the deputy chief of Industrial House, Kazem Ejlali, told delegates Iran had turned into one of the world’s biggest importers of wheat.

He said: “The level of imports contradicts the annual slogans supporting the national production, and this is also while a festival for wheat independence, meaning no importing of wheat, was held several years ago.”
