The tomb of Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Iranian mullahs’ regime in Tehran is being expanded and renovated. This site was built by organizations associated with the Revolutionary Guards and its cost so far is in hundreds of billions of tomans.

State-run Kayhan daily run an article titled “This is the grave of Imam of the miserables or the palace of kings?” and wrote: “These days if you happen to be around Khomeini’s tomb, you will see that this place is no longer the grave of Imam of the miserable, but a luxurious palace.”

When Khomeini came to Iran after the 1979 revolution, he said that he is just a “student of theology”. He said that he absolutely preferred the miserable over those who live in palaces, but now, his grave is the most expensive tomb in the world.

“The vast landscape, the dome and huge pillars and the thick cement walls got my attention so much that I was unable to pray as usual,” noted another reporter.

“On the way to the tomb you see hotels, halls, passages, shops, domes, minarets that are decorated fancily.”

State-run Etela’at daily wrote in 1992: The tomb of Khomeini is composed of a 600,000 meter square building with a roof one kilometer by over half a kilometer square that the like of which cannot be found anywhere in the religious world, whether Muslim, Christian or Jew.

In 1995, during the time that Ahmadinejad was the mayor of Tehran, he got a legislation adopted that called for a new town “Aftab” to be build around Khomeini’s tomb. The budget for this town that was to be built in two years was 800 billion tomans.
