Iran: Deaths caused by workplace injuries increases 19%

NCRI – Workplace injuries have soared by 19 per cent in Iran in the past year with the highest caused by falling from a height.

In the last Persian calendar year, 1,795 employees died at work – the highest figure in a decade and up from 1,507 people the previous year. Among the fatalities last year were 1,770 men and 25 women, according to the latest statistics.

The highest number of deaths were 271 in Tehran province, 143 in Isfahan and 107 in Khorasan Razavi.

Amongst the deaths in Iran caused by workplace injuries, 790 were caused by falling from a height and 369 cases were hit by heavy objects.

One former Iranian labor official said there has also been an increase in people severing limbs in the workplace, and blamed government inspectors for failing to do their jobs properly.
