Iran: 90 percent of the fish in Caspian decimated, tree-cutting blamed

NCRI – An environmental expert in Iran has claimed that 90 percent of the Caspian Sea fish has bee decimated and it has been caused by destruction of part of forest near Caspian Sea in northern Iran and soil erosion of many rivers.

Houshang Ziaei, a university professor told state-run ISNA news agency said: “Due to destruction of the forest in northern Iran and soil erosion in many rivers which were the fish from the Caspian see were spawning, these rivers are now dry or muddy.

As the result millions of fish died annually. Unfortunately, we now observe that due to destruction of forests, the soils which require 600 to 700 million years to be produced are easily washed away and replaced with stones.”

Meanwhile, in the northern regions, flooding has increased causing much damage. Many large companies have exploited the forests and destroyed their rich flora and fauna, while the northern forests are the remaining historic Hyrcanian forests in which many rare species of plants exist.

Fishery in Caspian Sea are has been one of the major sources of income for the deprived people of the region.
