Bread to rise in price by 30 per cent in Iran

The price of bread is to be increased by 30 per cent in Iran in the latest example of soaring inflation within the regime.

The government approved the price increase earlier this month and the cost of bread was set to go up on November 22.

The legislation approved on November 5 says: “The price of all types of bread will increase to a maximum of 30 percent to compensate for the increase in the cost of wheat and an increase in other costs for the bakeries and bread factories during the past two years, in comparison with the official approved pricing.”

Since the beginning of the Iranian year on March 20, officials have repeatedly denied reports that bread – the staple diet of the country’s poorest people – would go up in price.

Last May, the Iranian regime also announced a 20 to 30 percent increase in natural gas prices. The high increase in natural gas prices followed over 20 percent increase in water and electricity prices. This is while Iran has the world’s second largest reserves after Russia.

Hassan Rouhani has made no comment about the government’s u-turn to raise the price.
