Women Arab judges call on UN to return Iranians in Camp Liberty to Ashraf

Attack on Camp Liberty on June 15NCRI – Forty female Arab judges have demanded UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon to return the residents of Camp Liberty in Iraq to Ashraf to protect them against further missile attacks.

Independent Iraqi news agency NINA reported on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 that a statement by the 40 female judges from Arab Judges in Defense of Human Rights have declared: “On June 15, Camp Liberty, where some 3,000 Iranian asylum seekers reside, was attacked for the third time by more than 40 rockets, killing 2 and injuring many more, among the dead one was a female. In February 9 attack to this camp also 8 were killed including a woman. It is worth mentioning that the number of women in Camp Liberty is some 1000 Muslim women.”

The statement adds, “Presently and unfortunately the residents are continuously under psychological and physical pressures by the Government of Iraq. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has described has described the condition of residents in Liberty as an arbitrary detention. The Government of Iraq has been preventing the entery of human rights groups, lawyers and jurists and reporters. The terrorist groups affiliated to the Iranian regime have threatened the residents with another massacre.”

The judges emphasized: “As the Iraqi security officials have officially announced that there is no guarantees that another deadly attack will not occur against the residents of this camp, then it is necessary that the residents of Camp Liberty to be returned to Ashraf, where their safety is temporarily met until the process of their relocation.”

Camp Liberty, located near Baghdad international airport houses some 3,000 Iranians, members and supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) who have taken refuge in Iraq since over two decades ago.
