US must protect MEK in Iraq and demand release of Ashraf Seven, congressman tells Kerry

NCRI – The United States should demand the immediate release of the Ashraf Seven and act urgently to protect all Iranian dissidents in Iraq, Congressman Albio Sires has demanded.

In a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, Foreign Affairs Committee member Mr Sires said the US had a ‘moral and legal’ responsibility for the fate of all MEK [PMOI] members in Camps Liberty and Ashraf.

He told Mr Kerry: “I write to express my concern over the fate of seven Iranian dissidents abducted on September1, 2013, during a raid on Camp Ashraf that resulted in the deaths of 52 men, women and children.

“These victims… were staying at Camp Ashraf in accordance with an agreement between the United States, the United Nations, the government of Iraq and the residents.

“It is our responsibility to ensure the safety and security of these dissidents who relied on our promise of protection. Numerous attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 100 camp residents and countless injuries.

“I urge you to work with the government of Iraq to secure the safety of Camp Ashraf’s residents. I hope to see substantive steps on both the part of the US and the Iraqi government to provide a safe environment for the MEK and the swift release of the seven hostages still being held in captivity.”
