US condemns latest ‘brutal’ rocket attack on Camp Liberty

NCRI – US Secretary of State John Kerry has condemned the ‘brutal, senseless and utterly unacceptable’ rocket attack on Camp Liberty, also known as Camp Hurriya, and demanded the terrorist culprits be brought to justice.

Mr Kerry said: “The United States strongly condemns today’s brutal, senseless, and utterly unacceptable rocket attack on Camp Hurriya that killed and injured camp residents.

“At the highest levels, we have personally urged the government of Iraq to render all possible medical assistance to the victims and ensure the safety of the camp’s residents, consistent with its commitments and obligations.

“We’ve also called on the Government of Iraq to investigate this attack and bring the terrorists responsible to justice.”

He added: “We are consulting with the Government of Iraq and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to ascertain the full extent of this unprovoked terrorist attack.

“No matter the circumstances, on this point we remain absolute: the United States remains committed to assisting the Government of Iraq and UNAMI in implementing the December 25, 2011 agreement to quickly relocate the residents of Camp Hurriya outside Iraq. We must find a permanent and long term solution that ensures their safety.”

Saturday’s attack on the camp’s more than 3,000 residents members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK0 left two dead and at least 70 others injured, and was the third such attack since February.

The UN Secretary General’s envoy Martin Kobler has been taking no action over the past four months to provide any protection for Liberty, nor act to transfer the refugees back to their former home of Camp Ashraf.

Mrs Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran has written to Secretary of State Kerry, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and the High Commissioner for Refugees calling for immediate action to return the residents to Ashraf.

She added: “The Iranian regime and the Government of Iraq are determined to carry out the total massacre of the refugees and asylum seekers.”
