UNAMI urges Iraq to allow monitoring of Camp Ashraf

NCRI – The United Nations special representative to Iraq has called on Baghdad to allow the UN mission to monitor the situation in Camp Ashraf, where 3,400 Iranian dissidents reside.

According to Reuters on Saturday, Ad Melkert, UN special envoy for Iraq, urged Iraq at Friday’s Security Council debate to allow UN Assistance Mission for Iraq to monitor the situation at the camp.

Rights advocates said earlier this year the UN and the United States should take on protection of the camp to avert a tragedy which could lead to the deaths of residents, Reuters added.

UNAMI also expressed concerns in a statement released on Friday about the brutal attack by Nouri al-Maliki forces against the residents of Camp Ashraf.

UNAMI “is concerned over reports of recent violent incidents in Ashraf camp resulting in deaths and injuries,” the official statement posted on the UN website read.

“UNAMI reiterates that efforts are needed to stop violence and aim at peacefully resolving all issues.”

The statement added, “UNAMI calls for restraint and respect for humanitarian and human rights and urges the Iraqi authorities to provide humanitarian assistance in this regard and access to medical services.”

“UNAMI’s mandate includes the promotion of human rights in Iraq, and the Mission’s Human Rights Office regularly assesses the situation in and around the camp,” it said.
