Norway’s Labour Party demands protection of Camp Ashraf

NCRI – The Norwegian Labour Party has expressed serious concern about the situation of 3,400 Iranian dissidents residing in Camp Ashraf, Iraq.

In a statement, Norway’s Labour Party said the European Union’s resolution on Ashraf passed on April 24, 2009 has stressed that the residents of Ashraf are protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The EU resolution also called on Iraqi officials to respect the rights of the residents and to refrain from measures meant to expel or forcibly displace the residents inside Iraq, and end the siege on the camp.

The party called on Norwegian officials to cooperate with other states and international organizations like the United Nations and the EU to guarantee the protection of Ashraf residents and prevent violations of international conventions. It also called for UN monitoring of the camp.

The rights of Ashraf residents must be respected in accordance with the Fourth Geneva Conventions, the statement said.

Iraqi officials are urged to respect International Humanitarian Law and human rights principles when it comes to treating the residents of Ashraf, the Labour Party added.
