The Progress and Socialism Party, the United Socialist Party and the Socialist Party of Morocco have released statements in support of Camp Ashraf, where 3,400 members of the main Iranian opposition group reside in Iraq, demanding that the Iraqi government lift an unjust siege against the residents and comply with the European Parliament’s resolution on the Camp.
In their statements, they also called for respect for the rights of residents, members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), as “protected persons” under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The United Socialist Party of Morocco said in its statement, “We call on the United Nations forces to assume the protection of Camp Ashraf in order to prevent any abuses or forcible displacement of the residents. We also condemn the Iraqi government’s crimes against the people of Ashraf and call on that government to comply with the April 24, 2009 European Parliament resolution on Camp Ashraf. Those who have committed crimes should be put on trial and the rights of the residents as protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention must be protected.”
The Progress and Socialism Party called on the international community to help lift a siege on the camp and ensure the rights of the residents in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.
The Socialist Party of Morocco held a special session in support of Camp Ashraf, where it called on the US to adhere to its obligations and guarantee the safety and security of the residents. Like the other two parties, the Sociality Party of Morocco also called for compliance with the EP resolution as well as the Geneva Conventions by the Iraqi government.
It also urged the international community to help immediately end the pressures and suppressive restrictions against the residents of Ashraf.
