A SWANSEA woman who has been on hunger strike for more than a month is fighting for her life in hospital.

Farzaneh Dadkhah, of Land Side Road, Portmead, collapsed outside the US embassy in London last week after suffering a stroke six weeks into her hunger strike.

She is among a dozen Iranians who have been starving themselves for 42 days, urging the US to protect 3,400 Iranian refugees in Camp Ashraf in Iraq.

Mrs Dadkhah who lives in Swansea with her husband and two teenage daughters was rushed to hospital after complaining of chest pains last Tuesday.

She is understood to have suffered a stroke after a sudden rise in blood pressure and was transferred to the Heart Hospital.

The 41-year-old, who is a known human rights activist in Swansea, is currently in intensive care.

Fellow campaigner Saeed Abed said: "I have been going down to see them protest every day and the deterioration scares me. Every day they are closer to death. But Farzaneh has a sister called Zahra in the refugee camp in Iraq and she has dedicated her life to this cause."

Doctors say Mrs Dadkhah has lost considerable weight.

In recent days she has been lethargic and unable to mobilise far and her exercise tolerance has been significantly reduced due to loss of muscle power and function.

The protestors represent a group called the UK representative office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran.
