It urged an end to the siege on Ashraf and demanded the US forces to accept the responsibility to protect the city, where close to 3,400 members of the main Iranian opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), reside.

In its letter to Ban Ki-Moon, the Lebanese Forces noted: “We have been informed about the sudden intrusion of a large number of Iraqi police forces to Camp Ashraf. This action is a clear violation of the rights of Ashraf residents by the Iraqi government, and requires immediate intervention on your behalf.”

“This dangerous measure occurs while the European Parliament has underscored the rights of Ashraf residents in its April 24th resolution in accordance with International Humanitarian Law and the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

LF also said, “The only way to resolve the recent developments has been proposed thus by the international committee of In Search of Justice, which comprises 2,000 parliamentarians on both sides of the Atlantic: ‘Providing international guarantees to support Ashraf and acceptance of its protection by the American forces in the context of international commitments and obligations, especially since Ashraf residents have all been disarmed and are fully defenseless. In return, they obtained the commitment from the US to be provided with protection.’”

“We ask the UN to intervene through American forces in order to force retreat by the Iraqi police from Ashraf, and for the American forces to assume the protection of this camp.”
